Don’t Let the Title Fool You.

There’s an assumption that shows up in almost every workplace.

The higher someone is, the more they must know.

So people hold back.

They hesitate to speak up. They second guess what they see. They assume their perspective isn’t developed enough to be part of the conversation.

And over time, they stay in their lane… even when they see something others don’t.

The only consistent advantage your manager has is access to more information.

Not a better ability to think through it.

That difference shows up because:

  • they’re included in more conversations
  • they see decisions before they’re finalized
  • they understand context you may not have yet
  • they’re exposed to a broader view of what’s happening

But having information and knowing what to do with it are not the same thing.

Most people treat that gap like a barrier.

They assume they’re not supposed to think at that level yet.

So they wait.

Wait to be told. Wait to be asked. Wait until they feel “ready” to contribute.

But that mindset limits what you bring to the table.

You don’t need permission to think at a higher level.

You need a way to work through what you’re seeing.

If you want to close that gap:

  • Start thinking through situations beyond your immediate role
  • Ask why decisions are being made and not just what they are
  • Look at the bigger picture, even if you don’t have all the information

Develop your thinking before your title changes.

When you do that, something shifts.

You don’t wait to be included. You don’t limit yourself to what’s in front of you. You don’t assume others have it figured out just because they have more visibility.

You start contributing at a different level.

And over time, that’s what changes how you’re seen. That changes what you’re trusted with.

Shift how you think

and change what happens next.
